Brass Band of Huntsville Celebrates 25 Years
with "Galaxies and Milestones" Concert
Alabama's original British-style brass band marks a quarter-century of music with a
special anniversary performance at the new Sandra Moon Performing Arts Center, David A. Chan Theatre.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Brass Band of Huntsville (BBoH) will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special concert, "Galaxies and Milestones: Celebrating 25 Years," on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandra Moon Performing Arts Center – David A. Chan Theatre.
Founded in 2001 by Paul F. Zubrod, a WWII veteran and trombonist who was inspired to start a brass band after hearing a BBC broadcast of a British brass band competition, the Brass Band of Huntsville is Alabama's original British-style brass band and a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. What began as a single rehearsal on April 30, 2001, has grown into a diverse, all-volunteer ensemble of roughly 30 top-tier musicians drawn from across the Tennessee Valley region.
Over the past 25 years, BBoH has built a reputation described on social media as a "Musical Star" from the Rocket City, performing at least four concerts and two "Hops and Pops" performances each season. The band's repertoire spans American tunes, Big Band swing and jazz, music from Broadway and Hollywood, classical and contemporary brass band masterworks, and traditional marches — all performed on the traditional British brass band instrumentation of cornets, flugelhorn, tenor horns, baritones, euphoniums, trombones, basses, and percussion. The band is led by Music Director, Dr. Casey Thomas, and is a proud member of the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA).
The anniversary concert will be held in the newly opened Sandra Moon Performing Arts Center, a 600-plus-seat theater built into the former Grissom High School auditorium as part of the City of Huntsville's Sandra Moon Community Complex. The venue holds special significance for the band: since 2024, BBoH has been among the first group of local arts organizations — alongside the Huntsville Community Chorus Association, Huntsville Master Chorale, Huntsville Youth Orchestra, and Huntsville Concert Band — to call the Sandra Moon Community Complex's arts wing home for rehearsals and offices. "Galaxies and Milestones" will be one of the first major concerts staged in the complex's new performing arts theater, bringing the band's anniversary celebration full circle to the space it now calls home.
"Galaxies and Milestones: Celebrating 25 Years" promises an evening of the band's signature power, style, and lighthearted fun, honoring a milestone anniversary in a city long connected to space and exploration — fitting, given Huntsville's identity as the Rocket City.

The Brass Band of Huntsville (BBoH) hosted a landmark musical event, "Let Freedom Ring," which took place on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church. The performance served as a centerpiece of the region’s America 250 celebrations and honored the establishment of the U.S. Space Force and Huntsville’s pivotal role in the nation’s future as the permanent home of the U.S. Space Command Headquarters.
The evening will feature the highly anticipated world premiere of the official U.S. Space Force service song incorporated into the iconic "Armed Forces Salute." This historic commissioning project was spearheaded to recognize the newest branch of the military and its deep connection to the Rocket City.
The new arrangement was crafted by renowned composer Stephen Bulla, who served for thirty years as the Chief Arranger for "The President’s Own" United States Marine Band. Mr. Bulla will travel to Huntsville to guest conduct the premiere, sharing the podium with Dr. Casey Thomas, Music Director of the Brass Band of Huntsville.
"As Huntsville cements its legacy as a cornerstone of the U.S. Space Command, it is only fitting that our musical tributes reflect that growth," said Dr. Casey Thomas. "Collaborating with a composer of Stephen Bulla’s caliber to finally bring the Space Force into the 'Armed Forces Salute' is a profound honor for our musicians and our community."
